Access to Work Explained

What Is Access to Work?

Access to Work is a UK government scheme that provides financial support to help disabled people manage work-related tasks and remove barriers in the workplace. This support can apply to employees, self-employed individuals, freelancers, and business owners. Funding is used to pay for practical support, equipment, or adjustments that help make work more manageable.

Who Is Access to Work For?

Access to Work may be available if you:

  • Are disabled, neurodivergent, or have a long-term health condition

  • Are in paid work, self-employed, or about to start a job

  • Need practical support to carry out work-related tasks

Many neurodivergent people, including those with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and related conditions, use Access to Work to fund administrative and organisational support.

How My Services Fit with Access to Work

I provide practical, task-based virtual and in-person support that aligns with the type of assistance Access to Work typically funds.

This may include:

  • Administrative support

  • Executive-function assistance (such as task management, prioritisation, and organisation)

  • Communication and email support

  • Calendar and deadline management

  • Workflow and system organisation

  • Practical, on-the-day support at meetings or events

Support is focused on helping you manage your workload and reduce cognitive load — not coaching, therapy, or training.

How the Process Works

  1. You apply for Access to Work
Applications are made directly by you via the UK government website.

  2. You have an assessment
An assessor will discuss your work, challenges, and what support may be helpful.

  3. Support is recommended
If administrative or executive-function support is approved, you can name your chosen support provider.

  4. Funding is agreed
You’ll receive a letter outlining the approved support and funding.

  5. Support begins
Once approved, I can provide support as agreed.

  6. Invoicing and payment
Invoices are submitted in line with Access to Work requirements. Payment is usually made after support has been delivered.

What I Can Provide for Your Application

If requested, I can supply:

  • A clear service description

  • Hourly rates

  • Estimated hours of support

  • Invoices and timesheets

This information can be shared with your assessor as part of your application or assessment.

Important Things to Know

  • Access to Work funding is not guaranteed and is assessed on an individual basis

  • You must apply for Access to Work yourself — I cannot apply on your behalf

  • Funding decisions are made by Access to Work, not by me

  • Support is provided once funding has been approved

Access to Work and Neurodiversity

Access to Work is commonly used by neurodivergent individuals to fund practical support that helps with organisation, communication, and workload management. My approach is neurodiversity-affirming and focused on working in a way that respects different communication styles, processing needs, and executive-function challenges.
